Measuring Your GKI Is So Important

I am 2+ days into a five day water fast. How do I know if I have reached the optimal GKI zone and am in ketosis? The way to find out if you are truly in ketosis is to have a way of measuring your GKI. The Keto Mojo is my favorite health tool these days. It takes a measurement of blood glucose levels and ketone levels. After the measurements are taken the meter tells you what your GKI (Glucose Ketone Index) is.

Having a GKI reading of 1 or below means that you are in the highest level of ketosis. This means that your body is using ketones for energy by burning fat as well as damaged cells. New cells are formed from stem cells to replace any bad cells. Think of it as renewing your body. Who doesn’t want a renewed body?!

Measuring your GKI can become a bit addictive – almost like sugar. Of course, there will not be a lot of sugar in the keto dessert recipes because sugar = carbs. Typically a person would carb load before a workout. Carbs are easily turned into energy for the body to use. This is why you see athletes loading up on pasta to increase endurance. For weight training or workouts that do not require a lot of endurance you do not need as many carbs. In fact working out while fasting is beneficial because of the increased growth hormones. You just need to go slow and listen to your body. A less is more approach is better especially if you are in a prolonged fast. The last thing that you want to do is lose muscle and slow down metabolism.

Preparation and Measuring GKI So That You Have Success

Getting into a ketogenic state will help you to fast and to fast longer. Measuring your GKI will verify that you are in ketosis. You can reach ketosis on a plant based diet but it will be a little more challenging. The most important thing is to be sure to keep track of your carbs! My Fitness Pal has a free app which is an extremely helpful tool for doing this. Once you enter in your meals you can use a check list to add repeated foods easily. You can also load in recipes and the app will calculate the nutrition facts for you. When you have entered your meals into the food diary your total amount of carbs, fat, and protein will be displayed. This will help you to gauge where you are and how much of each you can or can’t have for the remainder of the day.

Ideally you should have 75% fat, 15% protein, and 10% carbs as a portion of calories per day. I personally had trouble reaching ketosis until I added in some organic free-range eggs as well as grass-fed butter and cheese. How many avocados can one person eat?

You will also need to have some electrolytes on hand to add to your water. These will prevent you from feeling fatigued or having cramps. I am using Trace Mineral Drops from ConcenTrace. Our bodies need these minerals to function properly especially on a prolonged fast.

Measuring my GKI – I am In High Ketosis & Almost Halfway There!!!

2+ days into my five day water fast and now I am now officially 55 hours into my fast. In another 5 hours I will be halfway there. I can’t believe it! Well I can because I did a three day water fast back in August but who’s counting? When I wake up I will be over the hump. Food never looked so good! I am dreaming about what I will eat to break this fast. That will be in my post on Saturday.
